always wear this never wear that it can

start to feel a bit prescriptive and

overly rigid

now granted many of these fashion rules

exist for a reason there's

some truth to them but most of them

aren't meant to be followed religiously

and honestly

some of them are just outdated i'm not

saying ignore the rules i think you

should learn the rules

understand why they're a rule in the

first place but then

feel free to bend or break them after

all style is as much art as it is

science

and a one-size-fits-all approach rarely

works

okay let's talk about fashion rules that

you should ignore rule number one

your shoes and belt have to match this

is probably the most pervasive and the

most outdated

menswear rule and it's totally not true

first off if you really wanted to match

your shoes and belts

you'd have a comically large collection

of belts but also matching your shoes

and your belt exactly can look a little

bit

too matchy like when i see someone with

a watch strap and a belt and shoes that

are all the exact same

shade of walnut that guy to me looks

like he's trying a little too hard

the truth is your belt and your shoes

and other leather

in your outfit should look good together

but that doesn't mean that it has to

be the exact same shade and color like

if you're wearing dark brown shoes you

can wear a medium or light brown belt

that's fine you can even mix brown and

black that's okay too

now if you don't want to do that try

mixing in some different colors for

example

like navy olive and gray are all great

colors for belts because they go with

many different shades of brown and black

shoes really if you haven't tried like

an olive or a gray suede belt

highly recommend giving it a shot it's

surprisingly versatile rule number two

your metals have to match

speaking of matching another piece of

conventional menswear wisdom says that

you shouldn't mix

metal tones and this is simply untrue

case in point the two-tone datejust i

mean if you had to match

every piece of metal in your outfit and

keep a consistent tone like with your

tie clips and

your watch bracelet and your other

bracelets and your necklace and your

belt buckle

it would be crazy you'd have to have two

versions of everything or you'd have to

pick either silver or gold

for the rest of your life the truth is

you can definitely mix and match metal

tones and i actually think that this

leads to a much more interesting look

so if you have a silver wedding band

feel free to wear a gold watch and vice

versa

trust me don't overthink this one rule

number three

don't wear blue and black together now

black and blue isn't the easiest

combo to pull off but when done properly

it looks really sharp

for example a true navy suit with black

oxford lace-ups is an

elegant look similarly a midnight blue

tuxedo jacket with black lapels

is going to set you apart in a subtle

but powerful way on the casual side you

can wear a black shirt or black

shoes with dark blue denim or midnight

blue shoes with black denim

i think this is actually a really cool

look it's slightly edgier and more

modern

than the always safe brown and blue

combo rule number four

always wear a belt now many purists

would argue

that if your pants have belt loops you

have to wear a belt even if you don't

need one

to hold your pants up personally i like

the clean lines that the beltless look

provides

and that's why most of my dress pants

don't have belt loops at all they just

have

side adjusters and suspender buttons but

even with casual pants i almost

always skip the belt unless i actually

need one

to hold my pants up by not wearing a

belt i find that shirts

lay flatter against my waist there's no

bulge from the belt buckle

it's one less step in the bathroom it's

more comfortable because

my belt's not either too tight or too

loose and i just think it's a cleaner

look

i really don't see a downside but feel

free to defend your love of belts

down below in the comments section rule

number five never wear graphic

t-shirts now i tend to mostly agree with

this rule and i think that beginners who

are just getting into style

should kind of avoid graphic t-shirts

and go for solid colors or simple

patterns instead

but i don't agree that every graphic tee

should be hunted down and burned

salem witch style there's definitely a

right way to wear graphic tees and it

can look cool if done properly

the key is to keep the rest of the

outfit totally subdued

so the graphic is kind of the star of

the show and everything else is just the

frame

now that said personally i don't really

own any graphic tees anymore i just

prefer the more minimal aesthetic

rule number six no logos or branding

this is similar to the graphic tees rule

a lot of guys

say that you shouldn't wear any obvious

logos or branding on your clothes and

again

this is something that i usually

recommend but i do think

some branding can look cool in certain

situations especially with casual

rugged or preppy outfits just like with

graphics you have to use branding and

logos in small

intentional doses like that subtle ralph

lauren or patagonia logo

can look really cool now personally i

probably wouldn't want more than one or

two visible logos

on my body at any given time or else i

start to feel like a billboard

rule number seven your undershirt

shouldn't be visible

okay this is actually a pretty good rule

and i abide by it ninety percent of the

time

but it can be broken obviously what

we're trying to avoid is the

crewneck undershirt that's visible under

your dress shirt

that's terrible look and it really can

ruin your outfit but there are certain

times where a visible undershirt does

make sense and it can actually enhance

your look

for example if you're wearing two

crewneck shirts on top of each other

like if you're wearing a crewneck

sweatshirt and then you have a crewneck

t-shirt or undershirt

underneath and you just see that little

sliver of undershirt

i think that can add a lot of dimension

and

texture and depth to an otherwise pretty

simple outfit that can also help if

you're wearing a shirt that kind of

matches your skin tone like a beige

sweater if you wear a white undershirt

and just show a little

sliver of crewneck that can help

differentiate the sweater from your skin

you can also wear your button-up shirts

open and let your undershirt show a

little bit

like for example i think a lot of guys

look really good with a short sleeve

button up

or in partially or totally open with a

crew neck or a tank top underneath

you can also do this with like flannel

shirts or work shirts just leave it

partially open and show a little bit of

undershirt and you don't have to go with

white you can play with different colors

and again done properly it can be a good

look the key here is to do it with

intention

and not accidentally rule number eight

don't wear neckties with button-down

collars here's another one that you hear

people repeat

over and over often without any thought

as to why it's true or not true

i think the logic is that button-down

collars are more casual than

non-button-down collars like spread

collars and so

they should be worn in casual situations

which usually don't call for

neckties but the truth is you can

definitely wear a tie with a button-down

collar shirt

it's just going to be a more casual look

so i probably wouldn't do this with like

a traditional dark colored suit with

shoulder pads and a full windsor knot

and black oxfords

you know that would be a little

mismatchy but with a four in hand or

prince albert knot and an oxford shirt

and a sport coat with you know soft

tailoring and soft shoulders

that's a great look in this case the

button-down collar is gonna feel right

at home

so especially for you guys who enjoy

that kind of trad preppy look

definitely feel free to wear a tie with

your button-down collars

and finally we have to end on the most

divisive fashion rule of all

rule number nine never wear socks with

sandals now most guys agree with this

rule and we'll never

give this look a shot i mean honestly

i'm still trying to get myself to try

this look outside of the house but if

you've ever

tried wearing socks with sandals you

can't deny how comfortable it is

there's also something inherently cool

about the

attitude that this look produces like

you just really don't care and you're

totally prioritizing function over form

i don't know there's something kind of

cool about it and i think this is why

these socks with sandals look

has been popular in certain fashion sub

communities for a long time now now of

course you can't do this with flip-flops

so if you do want to try this look you

have to wear like

birkenstocks or boston's tivas tacos

make sure your socks are clean and thick

wool is probably the best material or a

high quality like

combed pima cotton i'd probably go with

socks that are a solid color

maybe have some texture maybe a subtle

pattern now i can practically feel you
